How to Find and Successfully Raid a Woodland Mansion in Minecraft

Anyone who has ever found a Woodland Mansion in Minecraft will surely be extremely impressed by its size. These massive structures are one of the coolest features of the game world and provide interesting insights into the game’s lore. But purely in terms of gameplay, visiting Woodland Mansions is an exciting endeavor! Besides tough opponents, there’s also plenty of loot to be found here that you can take with you. Today, we’ll take a closer look at this large house.

Finding a Woodland Mansion in Minecraft: Location and Tips

For a long time, Woodland Mansions were a very rare structure in Minecraft, sometimes located several thousand blocks away. However, their frequency was increased with the 1.18 update, so you’ll now have more chances to find this structure in your world.

Basically, Woodland Mansions only spawn in Dark Forests, where you find dark oak trees and various mushrooms. They also have a chance to spawn in roofed forests, which are essentially a subcategory of dark forests. These two biomes are not as rare as they used to be, so you might have already found a Woodland Mansion during your explorations.

With an external map tool like Chunkbase, you can easily find Woodland Mansions if you don’t want to search for them in the game. You just have to enter your seed, and all the locations for Woodland Mansions will be displayed.

Use Cartographer Villages for Explorer Maps

Of course, there’s also a way to use in-game mechanics for your search. You’ll need a Cartographer Villager who will sell you an explorer map for a Woodland Mansion in exchange for 14 emeralds and a compass. Only master-level cartographers sell mansion maps.

Now, you surely want to know why you should actually search for these rare and surprisingly dangerous structures in Minecraft. In terms of structure, Woodland Mansions are the largest building that can naturally appear in the overworld of Minecraft. If you’re looking for one, you surely won’t be able to miss it. The structure is mostly made of a cobblestone base and dark oak wood. The floors and ceilings are made of birch wood, which provides a great contrast!

The Woodland Mansion always consists of three floors, with the top floor usually being smaller than the other two lower floors. The entrance features a large staircase connecting the first two floors. Otherwise, the mansion consists of high ceilings and long corridors lined with red and white carpets.

Secret Minecraft Woodland Mansion Rooms

From the main corridors, there are many different small rooms that are randomly generated. There are over 50 different variations, so each Woodland Mansion is unique! Additionally, there are many little secrets to discover, whether it’s a double (roof) floor, behind walls, or through windows from the outside. Explore every corner of the mansion to find hidden chests!

Some interesting rooms include:

  • a wool statue of a cat, chicken, or mage

  • a boxing ring

  • a room with a spider spawner

  • an obsidian statue

  • a room full of dark oak saplings

  • various crop farms (mushrooms, melons and pumpkins, wheat)

  • prison cells

  • several libraries

  • several bedrooms (but without real beds)

  • a fake End Portal

Mobs and Hostile Creatures in Woodland Mansions in Minecraft

Illager Enemies in Minecraft Woodland Mansion

However, you shouldn’t enter a Woodland Mansion unprepared, as some of the strongest monsters from the overworld of Minecraft await you there. Some of them might be familiar to you from village raids, outposts, or patrols, as they belong to the hostile faction of the Illagers. Various hints suggest that the Woodland Mansions are their home base.

  • Vindicators: Vindicators are strong melee fighters who attack you with an axe and can hit hard! They are also surprisingly fast once they’ve spotted you, so a bow is a good weapon from a distance.

  • Evokers: Evokers, on the other hand, are good ranged fighters and attack you with magic and vexes they summon. It’s best to defeat the Evoker quickly and then deal with the grey spirits with a shield. They only appear on the top two floors.

  • Regular Monsters: Other monsters don’t belong directly to the Woodland Mansion but still spawn in the dark corners and rooms. So, watch out for Creepers, Skeletons, Zombies, Spiders, and Witches during your exploration.

You should have this equipment in your inventory:

  • Diamond Axe with “Sharpness V” (or a sword)

  • at least full (and enchanted) Diamond Armor

  • Bow and Arrows

  • a Shield

  • sufficient Food

  • Water Bucket

  • Ender Chest

  • a Bed

  • regular Chests

  • enough Torches (to prevent monster spawns)

  • a Bell (to mark Illagers)

We recommend setting up a small base nearby with a bed and some chests to respawn close to the mansion after dying. Extra equipment in an Ender Chest doesn’t hurt either!

Rewards and Loot in Minecraft Woodland Mansions

Minecraft Woodland Mansion Treasures and Loot

Due to their size, Woodland Mansions naturally offer a lot of loot. You’ll find interesting items in almost every room that you can take with you. Defeat all monsters first and light everything up to explore the structure in peace afterward. Keep an eye out for these items in particular.

  • Allays: Helpful spirits can be found in the prison cells of the Woodland Mansions. We have an entire article about these little creatures if you want to know more. (Minecraft Allay Guide: Locations, Tasks, and More)

  • Enchanted Golden Apple: Some of the rarest items in Minecraft! They give you extremely good status effects and cannot be crafted.

  • Totems of Undying: They are dropped by Evokers and help you escape death. You should always have at least one totem with you.

  • Diamond Blocks: In the obsidian or lava room, you’ll find a full diamond block in the center.

  • Bookshelves: The various libraries are excellent for collecting books.

  • Enchanted Books: Some hidden chests also contain books with enchantments.

  • Music Discs: Both the disc “13” and “cat” can be found in the chests of a Woodland Mansion.

  • Vex Armor Trim: One of the smithing templates that you can only find in such a mansion.

Conclusion: The Exciting Minecraft Woodland Mansion Guide

Woodland Mansions are some of the coolest structures in Minecraft and spark the urge to explore. And since each structure is unique, you’ll discover some interesting rooms. Rent your own Minecraft server and search for a mansion together with your friends, fighting your way through the floors. This way, you’ll have a better chance of survival and can turn the structure into your base afterward!
