Creepers are probably the most iconic monsters in Minecraft, and their face is unmistakable. They silently sneak up on you from behind and explode without you being able to do anything. Thanks to their explosive behavior, they contain gunpowder and are therefore a really good mob to farm. But you probably don’t want to do that by wandering through your world at night and going on a dangerous monster hunt. This can end badly for you and just takes too long. That’s why today we’re introducing a cool Creeper farm that works without your help and that you can use AFK. In the end, you’ll have enough gunpowder!
Minecraft Creeper Farm: How Automatic Gunpowder Production Works
A Creeper farm should be present in every Minecraft world because sooner or later you’ll need a lot of gunpowder. You can either use it en masse for TNT or craft rockets for your Elytra. Additionally, gunpowder is also used when brewing splash potions. It’s a really valuable resource that needs to be in your storage.
However, Creepers are not as easy to spawn as zombies or skeletons, as there are spawners and dungeons for these two that you can search for. Unfortunately, there aren’t any for Creepers, which is why we have to rely on natural Creepers. We’ve already built a monster trap (Build a Minecraft Monster Trap: Automatically Gain Endless Resources) in an older article that you can use for your gunpowder. However, this also spawns other monsters.
There are also designs that specialize only in Creepers. For this, we take advantage of the dimensions of the Creepers and set up a farm so that only they can spawn based on their size. We also use a natural enemy of the Creeper: the cat! Together, this creates a smooth-running farm that’s perfect for a few hours AFK (“away from keyboard”).
Creeper Farm Construction: Step-by-Step Guide for Infinite Gunpowder
Creeper farms come in many different designs that work on different versions and platforms. The version we’re building today only works in the Java Edition. This is because spawning for Creepers works differently in Bedrock, making these farms more complicated. Additionally, there isn’t a design that works equally well for both platforms.

Building a Creeper Farm in Minecraft: Step-by-Step Instructions for Maximum Efficiency
The Best Location for Maximum Spawner Efficiency
First, you need to find a suitable location for your farm. The best place is over open water, as this prevents other monsters from spawning and filling up the limit. If you build the farm on land, be at least 128 blocks above the ground or light up as many caves and fields in this radius as possible. This is very exhausting, which is why open water is your best chance.
Collection Basin
In this farm, we don’t kill the Creepers ourselves but use a campfire. For this, build a water channel 8 blocks long and at least 3 blocks above the sea surface. The Creepers will fall over the edge and must land on the campfires. Below them, place the hoppers and the chest to automatically collect the gunpowder.
Surround the campfire with building blocks and create a 2-block-high tunnel. This costs a few blocks but ensures that the Creepers are collected without any problems.
Spawn Platform
Now comes the most important part. Above the source of the water channel, build a 3-block-high wall with the dimensions 2 by 3 upwards. This way, the Creepers will later fall down.
This is also the base of your platform. It measures 13x16 blocks but has the shape of an hourglass. In our picture, you can see the correct measurements. Then build a 2-block-high wall around the outside that reaches the water channel in the middle of the hourglass shape. The wall should not be higher than this.
Optimizing for Maximum Efficiency
Now comes the fine-tuning of the farm. First, you need to place trapdoors at the 2x3 hole in the middle and open them. As with other farms, this makes the Creepers think they can walk over the trapdoors. Instead, they fall down and get grilled by the campfires.
Next, you need to secure the floor of the farm against spiders. Use seven carpets on each side and arrange them in the pattern shown below. This ensures that no spiders spawn.
The most important part comes now. As mentioned in the materials, you’ll need two tamed cats. These have the ability to scare Creepers and make them automatically flee to the center of the farm. You can find cats in villages and tame them with raw fish. They will follow you, even over water. Place the cats at the end of each platform on the carpets and make them sit.
Roof and Spawn Security
To prevent other monsters from spawning alongside spiders, you now need to fill the roof with trapdoors. These are attached along the 2-block-high wall, so the space is less than 2 blocks high. This prevents the spawning of all other mobs except the Creepers, who are small enough. Placing the trapdoors can be a bit tricky, use Shift and work your way forward slowly.
Then you need to secure the roof of the Creeper farm and parts of the collection basin with slabs to prevent other monsters from spawning there.
Achieving Maximum Spawn Rate
Monsters spawn within a radius of 128 blocks around the player. To get the most out of the farm, you need to be very high up. Use bamboo scaffolding and build yourself 120 blocks up from the roof of the farm. Use the F3 menu and look for the Y-value.
Wait up there and let the game run while you do other things. If you wait longer than 3 in-game days, have either a bed or build a small shelter to avoid being attacked by Phantoms. Gradually, gunpowder should accumulate in your chest below! We already had a stack of gunpowder after twenty minutes!
Conclusion: Why a Creeper Farm in Minecraft is Essential for Gunpowder
Building a Creeper farm is a wonderful and easy way to obtain gunpowder. You don’t have to defeat the Creepers yourself, but with this farm, you can produce massive amounts of TNT and rockets for your world. Build infinite amounts of gunpowder on your own server and maintain control over your explosive power. Rent your Minecraft server and start gathering!
