How to Build an XP Farm: Level Up Quickly and Easily

Experience points are an important system in Minecraft, as they allow you to enchant your weapons, tools, and armor at an enchantment table later on. You can collect the small, green points through various activities, such as killing monsters, mining certain blocks, breeding animals, trading, or using a furnace. There are many ways to level up within the normal game. But what if you want to specifically reach level 30 and have nothing else to do at the moment? We provide you with some cool XP farm designs that you can seamlessly integrate into your world.

1. Simple Mob Trap

We already discussed building a classic mob trap in a previous article (How to Build an Automatic Monster Trap: Endless Resources) , so we won’t explain it in detail again here. Read the corresponding article if you need help. This mob trap is a great way to collect both resources and experience points. Due to fall damage, you only need to hit the monsters once to kill them. This makes the trap efficient, and at the same time, you get drops from zombies, skeletons, creepers, and witches.

You can easily expand our suggested design by adding one or two more levels. Otherwise, the design is quite simple and you can build it over the ocean of your choice to spawn the most mobs. We recommend this mob trap for beginners!

2. Spawner Trap

While exploring your Minecraft world, you have probably come across a strange room made of cobblestone and mossy cobblestone. These are dungeons, which have existed in Minecraft for a long time. They guarantee that certain monsters will spawn, and you can take advantage of that!

Minecraft Spawner Trap

Monster spawners exist for:

  • Zombies
  • Spiders
  • Skeletons
  • Cave Spiders
  • Silverfish (Stronghold)
  • Blazes (Nether)
  • Magma Cubes (Nether)

For an XP farm, one of the first three spawners is good, but since spiders can be a bit annoying, both zombie and skeleton spawners are the best choices. The monsters spawn within a certain radius and can be directed into a collection area for killing, similar to the first mob trap. If you are lucky, you might find multiple spawners close to each other and can use them together. However, you need to stay within a certain radius to keep the spawner active. You can tell it’s active by the flames it shows.

Guide for Spawner XP Farm

  1. First, you need to find a suitable spawner. Either you have already found one, or you can use a tool called Chunkbase to help you by entering your seed. It will show you the coordinates and the type of spawner.

  2. Light up the room and place a slab on the spawner to prevent anything from spawning so you can build in peace. Then dig out a certain area around the spawner, preferably 4 blocks in each direction and 3 blocks upward. There should be enough space for the monsters to spawn.

Minecraft Spawner Trap 2
  1. On one side, build a trench and fill it with water. This is where the monsters will be collected later. To move the monsters within the room itself, place water on the opposite side.

  2. Finally, create a small collection station for the monsters. Some farms also use a waterfall to give them fall damage, but this is not absolutely necessary for an XP farm. The collection area works similarly to the standard mob trap, using hoppers and a chest. Carefully remove all torches and wait for the monsters to gather.

3. Smelting Farm with Cacti

As mentioned in the introduction, you can also gain experience points by smelting items. This is particularly useful if you are playing in Peaceful mode and don’t want to fight monsters. This design works in any world and is therefore extremely convenient for getting XP in between.

Minecraft Cactus Farm

The design is based on an automatic cactus farm, which you can then process into green dye in the furnace. If you also want to automatically add fuel, you can build a seaweed farm or bamboo farm. However, we will primarily focus on the smelting farm with cacti. You can also use lava, coal, or blaze rods as fuel for the furnace, depending on your preference.

Guide for Cactus XP Farm

  1. Use a 9x9 area to build your cactus farm. Here, the system works similarly to the above farms, but with cacti instead of monsters. Build a water trench on one side and let the water flow to the opposite side. You can then add a hopper at the end to collect the cactus.

  2. Now build the cactus farm. You need to create an alternating pattern with building blocks so that the cacti have a free space next to them. Place sand on top and then the cactus. With this design, you can accommodate 24 cacti.

  3. To automatically break the cactus, place a block above it in the gaps with a fence. You can infinitely expand the design. Whenever the cactus wants to grow, the upper block will break it due to the fence and it will fall into the water trench.

Minecraft Cactus Farm Setup
  1. Then smelt the cactus in the furnace with a fuel of your choice. The good thing is that the experience is stored in the furnace, even if the items pass through. To get the XP, attach a lever to the furnace to stop the automatic extraction of the green dye and manually remove it. At the same time, you will receive your experience. You can either use the green dye or dispose of it.

Conclusion

With enough experience, you can enchant all your tools and armor as you wish! But constantly searching for experience can be annoying. The right XP farm makes the job much easier for you. Either focus on one of the mob traps or build an automatic system with cacti and hoppers. Both work perfectly! Level up faster and dominate the game with an XP farm on your own server. Rent your Minecraft server and reach new heights in no time! There are also some better XP farms, but these are intended for professionals. These include, for example, an Enderman farm or a Pigmen farm. We might take a closer look at these at a later date!
