Trading with Piglins in Minecraft: Guide & How to Build an Automatic Farm

In Minecraft, you can trade not only with villagers but also with Piglins in the Nether. These creatures are generally neutral towards you but have a keen interest in gold! When you trade with them, you can obtain some exclusive items. Piglin trading is a great way to acquire unique items. And as long as you have enough gold reserves and build an automatic machine, it all runs without your input. Today, let’s take a closer look at Piglins, their behavior patterns, the items they trade, and what they can do!

Piglins in Minecraft: Creatures with a Love for Gold

Minecraft trading with Piglins 1

Piglins can be found in the Nether and are a relatively new mob, introduced with the Nether Update 1.16. They replaced the former Pigmen mob that had been in Minecraft since the Alpha. You can find Piglins in the Nether Wastes, Crimson Forest, and Bastion Remnants. You’ll usually encounter them in groups.

Piglins are neutral mobs and won’t attack you as long as you’re wearing at least one piece of golden armor. This already shows their love for everything that glitters gold! Always wear a piece of gold armor so that Piglins don’t attack you. In groups, they can become quite aggressive and can quickly kill you. Additionally, they will attack if you attack them first. They use both gold swords and crossbows to attack. Some also wear gold armor.

Also, be careful not to open chests near Piglins as they don’t like it, and will attack you even if you’re wearing gold. Always use a hopper to empty chests.

All Items in Piglin Trading: Probabilities and Chances

When you throw a gold ingot at Piglins, they will pick it up, inspect it, and then give you a random item in return. This allows you to get some cool items that are exclusive and otherwise difficult or even impossible to obtain. Be careful, though, not to throw other gold items. Piglins will take anything made of gold. The trade only works with gold ingots.

Minecraft trading with Piglins 2

The trade is random, unlike with villagers, so you can’t determine which item you’ll get. However, there is a list of probabilities!

8.71% Chance:

  • 1 Obsidian
  • 1-3 Crying Obsidian
  • 1 Fire Charge
  • 2-4 Leather
  • 2-8 Soul Sand
  • 2-8 Nether Bricks
  • 6-12 Arrows (Bedrock) / Spectral Arrows (Java)
  • 8-16 Gravel
  • 8-16 Blackstone

4.36% Chance:

  • 3-9 String
  • 5-12 Nether Quartz

2.18% Chance:

  • 1 Water Bottle
  • 10-36 Iron Nuggets
  • 2-4 Ender Pearls

1.74% Chance:

  • Enchanted Boots with “Soul Speed”
  • Splash Potion of Fire Resistance
  • Potion of Fire Resistance

1.09% Chance:

  • Enchanted Book with “Soul Speed”

The enchanted books are, for example, a very rare trade and can only be found in the Nether. But some of the other items are also quite useful, including Obsidian, Ender Pearls, or Nether Quartz. As long as you have enough gold, you’ll be able to trade sufficiently.

Farming Gold in Minecraft: How to Get Enough for Piglin Trading

There are various ways to obtain large amounts of gold. You probably have already found enough in the Overworld, but for automation, infinite gold is important. Moreover, you probably don’t need it for your tools since gold is very soft and doesn’t last long.

You can get gold by:

  • Mining in the Nether
  • Mining in the Overworld (especially abundant in Badlands/Mesa)
  • Gold Farm

Building Guide: Automatic Piglin Trading Station in Minecraft

Of course, you don’t always have to trade with Piglins manually; you can set up an automatic farm. This isn’t particularly difficult! You just need a good source of sufficient gold, and you’ll be able to collect enough items. The chances remain random, but as mentioned, some items are a really good trade. Build the farm near Piglins, so you can easily capture one!

You can also expand this small farm and create multiple chambers. However, you’ll need enough gold to make it worthwhile! Remember to wear a piece of golden armor so that the Piglins don’t attack you.

Building Materials

  • 3 Building Blocks
  • 8 Glass Blocks
  • Hopper + Double Chest
  • 1 Comparator
  • 2 Redstone Dust
  • 1 Redstone Torch
  • 1 Dispenser
  • Name Tag or Golden Armor Piece

Step-by-Step Guide: Building an Automatic Piglin Trading Station

First, place a double chest with a hopper on one of its short sides. This is where the traded items will be collected. Behind it, place a comparator that ensures the whole mechanism works automatically. The comparator checks the hopper and sends a signal to the dispenser after each trade, which then dispenses a gold ingot.

Use the three building blocks on each side of the hopper and behind the comparator. Surround the hopper on three sides with glass walls that are two blocks high. This is where you’ll trap the Piglin.

You can best lure a Piglin with gold. Surely there are some nearby. Before you lure it, block the hopper with the Redstone torch and throw the gold on it (it shouldn’t fall through). A Piglin will come and inspect the gold. Be quick and build the fourth glass wall.

The Piglin is now trapped! As long as the Redstone torch is still active, you can give it a golden armor piece. Or you can remove the torch and name the Piglin with a name tag. Both ensure it doesn’t disappear.

Next, we need to build the rest of the Redstone. Use the torch you just used and place it on the building block behind the comparator. Put another block on top and two Redstone dust towards the center. Above the hole where the Piglin is trapped, place the dispenser with its opening facing down. Fill the dispenser with plenty of gold ingots.

Finally, you need to activate the farm and start the loop. This can be done with a simple lever on the back block, which you toggle twice. A gold ingot will be dispensed, and the Piglin will trade it for one of the items listed above. It will slide through the hopper, causing the comparator to send another signal to the dispenser. As long as there are enough gold ingots, the farm runs automatically!

Conclusion: Why Piglin Trading in Minecraft is So Practical

Piglin trading is a really underrated feature that you should definitely use in your world. It saves you from having to painstakingly collect some items, especially Ender Pearls or Nether Quartz. Plus, an automatic farm is really easy to build. With trading, you can easily obtain a bunch of cool and exclusive items. Rent your Minecraft server and collect these with your friends. This way, you’ll always have enough resources for projects or ideas!
