Build an Automatic Blaze Farm: Infinite Blaze Rods and Experience Points

The Nether offers unique challenges, and Blazes are among the most important foes. With this guide, you’ll learn how to build an efficient automatic Blaze farm to collect blaze rods and experience points. They consist of many yellow rods and a head. Additionally, they are surrounded by smoke, indicating that they are very hot, much like their surroundings. Blazes are extremely important for progression in Minecraft, so you won’t be able to avoid seeking them out. We’ll show you how to easily find Blazes, effectively use their loot, and even build an automatic Blaze farm!

Finding Blazes: The Best Places in the Nether

Blazes can only be found in the Nether, and there only in Nether fortresses. They spawn sporadically throughout, but you’re most likely to encounter them at their spawners. These are unique to the fortresses and cannot be found anywhere else. If you want to navigate the Nether, be sure to check out our previous guide (Surviving Minecraft Nether: Tips and Tricks for Experienced Players) to best prepare yourself for the hellish dimension.

Be very cautious when approaching a Blaze. They shoot fireballs that can set you ablaze instantly. Additionally, these can knock you off the fortress, which is obviously undesirable. The Blaze fires three of these shots in succession, and they can travel up to 46 blocks! It’s best to use a shield to protect yourself against them.

Using Blaze Rods: Essential Recipes and Benefits

Blazes are crucial for reaching the end of Minecraft. Their loot, blaze rods, can be used for various purposes. Thus, an automatic farm in the Nether is worthwhile to kill Blazes and collect the rods. The loot is influenced by the “Looting” enchantment. With it, you can get up to 4 blaze rods at once!

  • Eye of Ender: To craft Eyes of Ender, find a Stronghold, and repair it, you’ll need blaze powder in addition to regular ender pearls. This powder can only be created from blaze rods. This makes such a farm extremely important to always have enough Eyes of Ender to craft.
  • Brewing: For brewing, both the rods and the powder are essential. A brewing stand can only be built with a blaze rod. Additionally, processing potions always requires blaze powder, as the process doesn’t work without it.
  • Magma Cream: For magma cream, you need a slime ball and blaze powder. From this, you can make magma blocks.
  • End Rod: End rods provide unique lighting. They look really cool, but you’ll need both a blaze rod and a popped chorus fruit to craft them.
  • Fuel: Blaze rods can be used as simple fuel for your furnaces. They can smelt 12 items in succession, making them very effective! In the list of best fuels, they rank fourth, behind a bucket of lava, a block of coal, and a block of dried kelp.

Blazes are also a great source of experience points, especially for the middle section of the game. Each Blaze killed gives you 10 experience points. Besides the loot, you can use such a farm for XP, which is, of course, very convenient and allows you to gain a lot of experience in a short time.

How to Build an Automatic Blaze Farm: Step-by-Step Guide

While earlier blaze farms were very difficult to build, it’s now absolutely no problem. The guide follows a similar principle to a mob trap, but in the Nether. It’s worth noting that Blazes don’t die in lava but are pushed away by it, similar to water. We make use of this mechanic!

Tip: It’s best to find a blaze spawner that is already exposed. This makes building the farm significantly easier. In our case, we weren’t so lucky, but a good pickaxe will do the trick!

Materials Needed

  • Possibly glowing blocks
  • Dirt (as scaffolding)
  • Several stacks of non-flammable building blocks
  • 2 slabs
  • 4 buckets of lava
  • Hopper + chest
  • Sword with “Sharpness,” “Knockback,” and “Looting”

Step-by-Step Instructions

To build peacefully and not be disturbed by Blazes, you should surround the spawner with glowing blocks (e.g., Glowstone). Alternatively, you can switch to “Peaceful” mode during the building process, which is naturally very pleasant and saves you a lot of frustration.

To create enough space around the spawner for the Blazes, you need to clear a room of 9x9x8 blocks. It’s best to mark the distances with dirt to avoid confusion. Go 3 blocks up, 4 to each side, and another 4 down. This creates the box where the Blazes can spawn.

Then, enclose this room. Use a building block of your choice that is also suitable for the environment. Wood is not advisable as it would burn. The edges of the large box have dimensions of 11x11x10 blocks. We chose andesite and glass, which is much better, especially if you want visibility. Leave one block open at the bottom center.

In each of the lower corners, place a bucket of lava. On top of the spawner, place a slab so that Blazes don’t spawn.

Finally, we build the collection mechanism. Dig 4 blocks deep below the farm. Surround the hole on all sides with 3 building blocks each, on the front side with only two and a slab, under which you can crouch and attack. With a hopper and a chest, the farm is complete!

When you switch back to monster mode, the Blazes will spawn. They will sink down and be collected by the lava. You can then stand below and fight them with your sword. The blaze rods are automatically collected by the hopper, but you gain valuable experience points.

Conclusion

A Blaze farm is easy to build and should definitely exist in your Minecraft world. Blazes are not only a wonderful source of experience points, but they also drop useful blaze rods that you can use for various things in your world.
