Discover Frog Species and Build an Automatic Frog Light Farm in Minecraft

Minecraft is a game with a highly developed fauna. We have covered many different animals in several articles, but frogs have been left out until now. These amusing creatures are incredibly handy! The community-selected mobs are a blend of real frogs and a bit of Minecraft fantasy. They form a wonderful bridge for players who want to explore the wildlife and collect various items. Especially the colorful frog lights are indispensable for creative people! Today, we provide you with all the essential information about frogs in Minecraft and show you a simple and automatic frog light farm!

Exploring Frog Habitats in Minecraft

Finding frogs in Minecraft

Frogs have an interesting history in Minecraft. They were first introduced at Minecon Live 2019, where they lost the voting against the mountain biome. However, two years later, the “Wild Update” was announced, which included modifications to the swamp, the second-place biome. Frogs were an essential part of this update.

Since version 1.19, you can find frogs in the swamp and mangrove swamp. While you can find the brown frogs in the regular swamp, the white variant can be found in the mangrove swamp. The animals hop around merrily and are quite hard to miss.

Understanding Frog Breeding and Colors

Frog breeding in Minecraft

We’ve already covered two of the three different colorations, but one is still missing. There is also a blue frog, which does not spawn naturally. However, you can obtain it—and the other two forms—through breeding. However, this works a bit differently than with other animals.

To breed frogs, you need slime balls, which are obtained from green slimes in the swamp. Feed the slimes to the frogs, and soon offspring will appear. One of the frogs will then seek out a nearby water source and lay eggs there. Wait for the eggs to hatch and a tadpole to emerge.

Depending on the biome where the tadpole grows into a frog, its color will change! You can carry the tadpoles in a bucket to achieve your desired coloration.

  • Temperate Frog: Pleasant biomes (forests and meadows)

  • Cold Frog: Icy biomes (mountains, snow, and in the End)

  • Warm Frog: Hot biomes (deserts, jungles, and Nether)

If you have all three variations on leads, you can even earn an achievement! It’s called “When the Frogs Come Marching In” and is a great milestone for your Minecraft world.

Frogs versus Fireflies: An Update Conflict

Before the update was released, frogs mistakenly ate fireflies. However, these are poisonous to real frogs and were therefore removed from the game. Similarly, parrots were initially bred with cookies—but chocolate is also poisonous to them. Frogs are yet another animal where Mojang draws inspiration from real life. Interestingly, fireflies will be added in the upcoming Spring Update 2025 in the form of firefly bushes.

The Art of Frog Light Harvesting

But you’re probably wondering why you need all three colors. Well, for building projects, frogs are indispensable and a source of beautiful lights in Minecraft! You can obtain three different color variations, expanding your repertoire of materials!

When a frog eats a magma cube, it can transform it into a frog light. These blocks are similar to sea lanterns and are a fantastic light source for your structures. This only works with small magma cubes and can be a bit tricky. After all, these monsters can only be found in the Nether. Fortunately, this can be bypassed with a portal and some leads! Magma cubes also don’t attack your frogs, making a farm relatively simple.

Frog light colors and their corresponding frogs:

  • Temperate Frog: Ochre

  • Cold Frog: Verdant

  • Warm Frog: Pearlescent

The frog lights are simply spat out and can be collected by you or a hopper. You can build and dismantle them completely without tools, an advantage over other light sources like glowstone. Following the previous achievement, you can unlock the “With United Forces!” achievement with three different frog lights.

Guide to Building an Automatic Frog Light Farm

Automatic frog light farm in Minecraft

Since frog lights are such a great light source, you’ll surely want to have and collect some of them. Building an automatic farm is worthwhile for this! On one hand, you’ll need your desired frogs, but also a good source of magma cubes. In the Nether, these spawn exclusively in the basalt delta, but in some bastion remnants, you’ll also find magma cube spawners, which are naturally perfect for such a farm.

Materials for the Farm

  • several stacks of building blocks

  • three slabs

  • powder snow in a bucket

  • 9 hoppers + 9 carpets

  • a double chest + glass block

  • ladders and trapdoor

Step-by-Step Farm Construction Guide

  1. First, find a bastion remnant that also has a magma cube spawner. Switch to “Peaceful” mode for the farm construction so that piglins don’t bother you. Measure a box around the spawner. The dimensions are two blocks above and five below the spawner. The radius is five blocks each, making the farm dimensions 8x11x11 blocks.

  2. On one side, build a small chamber where you can stand AFK and attract the magma cubes. Use slabs to have a small lookout into the farm. Then dig out a 3x3 field and make it four blocks deep. The cubes will fall in and be eaten by the frogs. Place your hoppers and carpets over them in the hole. All hoppers should point into a chest that you can open over your small chamber. This works best with a glass block above it.

  3. In the middle and one block above the floor, place a block of powder snow. This breaks the magma cubes into their smallest forms, allowing the frogs to eat them.

  4. You can bring the frogs into your farm through a portal. It’s best to temporarily build this directly in the farm so the frogs can reach the 3x3 hole. Once you have enough frogs, go to your small chamber and turn the monsters back on. Magma cubes will then spawn, try to hop towards you, but fall into the hole and be transformed into frog lights by the frogs!

Conclusion

Frogs are an exciting creature in Minecraft and drop frog lights with the help of magma cubes. These light sources are some of the most beautiful blocks to bring your building projects to life and illuminate them perfectly! Rent your own Minecraft server and set out with your friends to find the individual frog colors. Then you can work together on an automatic frog light farm to always keep things bright!
