Minecraft has been receiving many great updates lately, bringing new challenges for both old and new players. Among these are the trial chambers introduced with update 1.21, which are another component of Minecraft’s archaeological gameplay loop. They give you and other players the opportunity to locate underground ruins and complete certain tasks to obtain items. The trial chambers are designed to encourage exploration of your world while also providing a challenge for you as a player! We’ll show you everything you need to know and how to conquer the trial chambers.
Minecraft Trial Chambers Explained: Everything You Need to Know
If you haven’t played much Minecraft in recent months, you might not be familiar with this new update. The new trial chambers are more or less an evolution of the old dungeons (Monster Rooms) that have been around since the early alpha.
You can recognize them by their green and orange copper blocks and dark gray tuff. They have an industrial charm while also appearing as long-forgotten ruins of a past civilization. Trial chambers present a significant challenge, but you’ll be richly rewarded!
How to Find the Trial Chambers in Minecraft
There are several ways to find trial chambers. The easiest is to obtain an explorer map from a cartographer in a village. These work like maps for ocean monuments or woodland mansions and will show you one of the trial chambers in your world.
Your second option is luck! Trial chambers are best found between Y-Level 0 and -40 and only occur once every 512×512 blocks. You will likely recognize the outer walls by their distinct blocks when you’re underground. Since the chambers are quite large, they usually span several hundred blocks.
Minecraft Trial Chambers: Structure & Key Features
Once you’ve found a trial chamber, you should first orient yourself and get an overview. The underground structures can be very large and somewhat confusing due to the similar blocks. Don’t lose track and try to mentally map out the area.
There are three different components that make up the trial chambers in Minecraft:
- Entrance: You may not always enter through an entrance, but they usually connect to a cave. Entrances are often marked by a planted tree. With a bit of luck, you may also find safes here.
- Corridors and Hallways: These parts of the trial chambers connect the individual rooms and consist of many different elements. They are marked by stairs, pillars, and especially many clay pots that also contain loot. Sometimes you’ll also find spawners here, so be cautious!
- Trial Chambers: The chambers themselves are there to test you against monsters. They are equipped with trial spawners, and you must survive until all are defeated. Here, you’ll also find the gust, the newest mob in Minecraft.
Trial Spawners in Minecraft: How They Work
Since the trial chambers are based on the old dungeons, they also contain spawners. However, these behave differently and do not simply create endless monsters; they are tailored to the trials. They activate when you are close enough (14 blocks) and spawn monsters until you have defeated them all. You’ll find the trial spawners in the corridors and the chambers themselves.
Monsters spawn regardless of the light level, and the type of monsters depends on the chamber’s design. We’ll delve into this further below!
Once all monsters are defeated, the spawner transforms and drops various items for you. These include either a vault key (50%), food (15%), or some potions (5%). The trial spawner remains inactive for 30 minutes, allowing you to return and face the battle again.
Trial Chamber Loot: The Items You Can Find
But why should you take on this challenge? It’s a valid question, as a spawner is no small feat, and it must be worthwhile to visit a trial chamber. Thankfully, there are some great items that you can only obtain here. These are hidden in chests, in clay pots, or in safes. By the way, each player can only open a safe once.
The safes drop up to six items when you unlock them with a won trial key. Some highlights include:
- Record “Precipice”
- Special banner pattern for the gust
- Enchanted trident
- Armor trims
- Wind orbs
The gust is also worth visiting the trial chambers for, as this new mob can only be found here. It resembles the blaze in the Nether but is based on wind instead of fire and can blow you away. Additionally, it is immune to ranged weapons, so a bow or crossbow won’t get you far here. Gusts drop gust rods, which you need for crafting the new mace.
Activating Sinister Trial Chambers: Here’s How
A bigger challenge comes from the sinister trial chambers. You can activate these by applying the “Ominous Doom” or “Impending Trial” effect. You can obtain this by starting a raid and killing the leader. This drops an “ominous bottle” that you must drink in the trial chamber. All spawners transform into more difficult versions.
Additional loot from sinister safes includes:
- Record “Creator”
- Heavy core (for mace)
- Rare banner patterns
- Rare armor trims
- Diamond blocks
- Enchanted books
Trial Chamber Monsters: The Enemies Awaiting You
Finally, let’s show you which monsters await you in the trial chamber. This always depends on the respective chambers and the trial spawners. The spawned monsters are determined by the blocks on the floor around the spawner. In a sinister trial, more and stronger monsters spawn, additionally equipped and giving you negative status effects. The monsters are divided into four categories.
Melee:
- Zombies
- Husk
- Slimes
Melee (small):
- Silverfish
- Baby Zombies
- Spiders
- Cave Spiders
Ranged:
- Skeletons
- Strays
- Swamp Skeleton
Special:
- Gust (only found here)
Conclusion
Trial chambers are a fantastic addition to Minecraft, significantly expanding the possibilities underground! They are a great challenge for well-equipped players and contain cool items you shouldn’t miss. With a sinister effect, you can make it even more challenging. Rent your own Minecraft server and battle together with others in the trial chambers. The more players, the more monsters spawn! But in the end, each of you can reap the rewards!
