Bartering with Piglins in Minecraft: Guide & How to Build an Automatic Farm

In Minecraft, you can trade not only with villagers but also with Piglins in the Nether. These mobs are generally neutral towards you but have a fondness for gold! By trading with them, you can acquire some exclusive items. Piglin bartering is a great way to get exclusive items, and as long as you have enough gold supplies and build an automatic machine, it all runs without your input. Today, let’s take a closer look at Piglins, their behavior patterns, what items they trade, and what they can do!

Piglins in Minecraft: Mobs with a Love for Gold

Minecraft Piglin Bartering 1

Piglins can be found in the Nether and are a relatively new mob, introduced with the Nether Update 1.16. They replaced the former Pigmen mob, which had been in Minecraft since the Alpha. Piglins can be found in Nether Wastes, Crimson Forests, and Bastion Remnants. You’ll often encounter them in groups.

Piglins are neutral mobs that won’t attack you as long as you’re wearing at least one piece of gold armor. This behavior already shows their love for anything that glitters gold! Always wear a piece of gold armor to prevent Piglins from attacking you. In groups, they can become quite aggressive and quickly kill you. They will also attack if you provoke them. They use both gold swords and crossbows to attack. Some may also wear gold armor.

Be sure not to open chests near Piglins. They don’t like that at all and will attack you even if you’re wearing gold. Always use a hopper to empty chests.

All Items in Piglin Bartering: Probabilities and Chances

When you throw a gold ingot at Piglins, they will pick it up, inspect it, and give you a random item in return. This way, you can acquire some cool items that are exclusive and otherwise either hard or impossible to obtain. Be careful not to throw other gold items, as Piglins will take anything made of gold. The trade only works with gold ingots.

Minecraft Piglin Bartering 2

Unlike villagers, the trade is random, so you can’t choose which item you receive. However, there is a list of probabilities!

Chance of 8.71%:

  • 1 Obsidian
  • 1-3 Crying Obsidian
  • 1 Fire Charge
  • 2-4 Leather
  • 2-8 Soul Sand
  • 2-8 Nether Bricks
  • 6-12 Arrows (Bedrock) / Spectral Arrows (Java)
  • 8-16 Gravel
  • 8-16 Blackstone

Chance of 4.36%:

  • 3-9 String
  • 5-12 Nether Quartz

Chance of 2.18%:

  • 1 Water Bottle
  • 10-36 Iron Nuggets
  • 2-4 Ender Pearls

Chance of 1.74%:

  • Enchanted Boots with “Soul Speed”
  • Splash Potion of Fire Resistance
  • Potion of Fire Resistance

Chance of 1.09%:

  • Enchanted Book with “Soul Speed”

The enchanted books, for example, are a very rare trade and can only be found in the Nether. However, some of the other items are quite useful, such as obsidian, ender pearls, or nether quartz. So, as long as you have enough gold, you can trade sufficiently.

Farming Gold in Minecraft: How to Get Enough for Piglin Bartering

There are several ways to obtain plenty of gold. You might have already found enough in the Overworld, but for automation, infinite gold is essential. You probably don’t need it for your tools because gold itself is very soft and doesn’t last long.

Ways to obtain gold include:

  • Mining in the Nether
  • Mining in the Overworld (particularly abundant in Badlands/Mesa)
  • Gold farm

Construction Guide: Automatic Piglin Trading Station in Minecraft

Of course, you don’t always have to trade with Piglins manually; you can set up an automatic farm. It isn’t particularly difficult! You just need a good source of sufficient gold, and you can collect enough items. The chances remain random, but as mentioned before, some items are a really good trade. Build the farm near Piglins so you can catch one right away!

You can expand this small farm as much as you like and create multiple chambers. However, you should have enough gold available to make it worthwhile! Remember to wear a piece of gold armor so the Piglins don’t attack you.

Materials Needed

  • 3 Building Blocks
  • 8 Glass Blocks
  • Hopper + Double Chest
  • 1 Comparator
  • 2 Redstone Dust
  • 1 Redstone Torch
  • 1 Dispenser
  • Name Tag or Gold Armor Piece

Step-by-Step Guide: Building an Automatic Piglin Trading Station

First, place a double chest with a hopper on one of the short sides. This is where the traded items will be collected. Behind it, place a comparator to ensure the entire mechanism works automatically. The comparator checks the hopper and sends a signal to the dispenser after each trade, which then dispenses a gold ingot.

Minecraft Piglin Bartering 3

Use the three building blocks on the right and left of the hopper and behind the comparator. Then, surround the hopper on three sides with 2-block-high glass walls. This is where the Piglin will be trapped.

Minecraft Piglin Bartering 4

Naturally, you can best lure a Piglin with gold. Some are likely already nearby. Before luring it, block the hopper with the redstone torch and then throw the gold on top (it shouldn’t fall through). A Piglin will come and inspect the gold. Act quickly and build the fourth wall from glass.

Minecraft Piglin Bartering 5

The Piglin is now trapped! While the redstone torch is still active, you can give it a piece of gold armor. Alternatively, remove the torch and name the Piglin with a name tag. Both methods ensure it doesn’t disappear.

Next, we need to build the remaining redstone. Use the previously used torch and place it on the building block behind the comparator. Place another block above it and two redstone dust towards the center. Over the hole where the Piglin is trapped, place the dispenser with its opening facing down. Fill the dispenser with plenty of gold ingots.

Minecraft Piglin Bartering 6

Finally, you need to activate the farm and start the loop. This can be done with a simple lever on the back block, which you toggle twice. A gold ingot will be dispensed, and the Piglin will trade it for one of the items listed above. It will slide through the hopper, causing the comparator to send another signal to the dispenser. As long as there are enough gold ingots, the farm will run automatically!

Conclusion: Why Piglin Bartering in Minecraft is So Handy

Piglin bartering is a highly underrated feature that you should definitely use in your world. It saves you the effort of collecting some items, especially ender pearls or nether quartz. Additionally, an automatic farm is really easy to build. With bartering, you can easily obtain a bunch of cool and exclusive items. Rent your Minecraft server and collect these items with your friends. This way, you’ll always have enough resources for projects or ideas!
