Building a Minecraft Mushroom Farm: Automatic Farming for Food, Brewing, and Decoration

Mushrooms are among the most versatile resources in Minecraft. Whether for delicious mushroom soups, useful potions, or as decoration – they are indispensable. However, manual gathering can be time-consuming. With an automatic mushroom farm, you ensure a steady supply. In this guide, you’ll learn how to build your own mushroom farm in just a few steps!

Mushrooms in Minecraft: Food, Potions, and More

There are two types of mushrooms: a brown mushroom and a red mushroom. Both have been integrated into the game since the early Classic versions of Minecraft, and their function has changed surprisingly little since then!

Where to Find Mushrooms in Minecraft

Minecraft Automatic Mushroom Farm 1

While playing Minecraft, you’ve likely come across a mushroom or two. They grow practically everywhere if the light level is below 12. You’ll most commonly find them under trees or in dark caves. You’ll also find mushrooms in the Nether! You can harvest and collect them easily with your hand, just like any other vegetation. One of the best features of mushrooms is that they spread if you don’t harvest them. We will take advantage of this fact later when building the automatic farm.

If you’re specifically looking for mushrooms, the appropriate biome is your best bet. The Mushroom Island is quite rare and only available as an island, but it’s full of mushrooms! Additionally, the biome is very unique, as you’ll also find Mooshroom cows there, which are infested with mushrooms. You can remove these with shears. At the same time, no hostile mobs spawn here, making the biome unique.

Mushrooms as a Food Source: Soup and More

Minecraft Automatic Mushroom Farm 3

Mushrooms are used in three delicious recipes to keep you well-fed. Mushroom soup, which has been around for many years, can be crafted and enjoyed with both types of mushrooms and a bowl. For a complete rabbit stew, you only need one of the best mushrooms. Lastly, you can cook a suspicious stew, where different flowers give you specific effects.

Mushrooms for Brewing: Making Useful Potions

A brown mushroom is also needed to craft fermented spider eyes, along with sugar and a regular spider eye. With these, you can brew various potions, depending on the recipe. Using the fermented spider eye, you can brew a potion of slowness, harming, weakness, or invisibility.

Mushrooms as Decoration: Creative Uses

You can also simply use mushrooms as decoration. They can be placed on any block and used as natural decor. They bring a lot of variety and can be easily integrated into structures. For your home, you can also place them in flower pots, which looks nice!

The small mushrooms can also be grown into their large variants with bone meal, which you can find in swamps, dark forests, or on Mushroom Island. These are also a wonderful way to give your world a new look and create a unique decoration.

Building an Automatic Mushroom Farm in Minecraft: Step-by-Step

A mushroom farm is based on the property that mushrooms grow on their own. Players have been taking advantage of this since the early versions and it can easily be integrated into modern Minecraft. We just need to ensure that enough mushrooms grow and that they are harvested automatically. Water and hoppers are our friends here. We also use a simple Redstone clock to automatically turn the water on and off.

This farm works best if you build the design we present several times on top of each other. Six of these chambers should be enough to gather plenty of mushrooms, as they grow quite slowly, so it may take some time for the farm to work effectively.

Materials Needed for Building an Automatic Mushroom Farm

For one chamber:

  • 1 stack of Podzol
  • several stacks of building blocks
  • 2 trapdoors + 2 water buckets
  • 2 Redstone torches
  • 1 lever
  • 1 hopper + chest + sign
  • 24 mushrooms

Redstone Hopper Clock:

  • 2 hoppers
  • 2 Redstone comparators
  • 6 Redstone dust
  • 2 sticky pistons
  • 1 Redstone block
  • 1 stack of items

Automatic Mushroom Farm: Step-by-Step Instructions

First, we create a setup that allows the mushrooms to spread. A dimension of 4x4 blocks works best, as this allows them to propagate efficiently. We use two platforms for this, with a gap between each. At the ends and in the middle, place a row of mushrooms above and below. Use the mushrooms you need or mix both types.

Next, we lay the foundation for the Redstone. Build a small staircase in the middle and place a Redstone torch on the lower back and the side of the upper block. If you want to operate the farm manually, simply use a lever or button to control the water.

Minecraft Automatic Mushroom Farm 5

Besides the Redstone, we also need water to harvest the mushrooms. Use a trapdoor and water for this. Use additional building blocks (like the glass in the picture) to prevent the water from overflowing.

Minecraft Automatic Mushroom Farm 6

On the opposite side, we build the collection mechanism. Everything must be enclosed, with a hole at each end where the mushrooms fall. There, build two small water channels that meet in the middle at a hopper. Place a sign above the hopper to stop the water.

Minecraft Automatic Mushroom Farm 7

And that’s it! Once enough mushrooms have grown, simply toggle the lever and the water will flush all the mushrooms into the chest. You can build the farm as high as you like to obtain even more mushrooms.

Bonus: Automation with a Redstone Hopper Clock

With an automatic Redstone hopper clock, you don’t have to do anything manually. It uses two hoppers facing each other, constantly exchanging items and sending a Redstone signal. You can see the setup in our picture. Comparators compare the contents of the hoppers, and sticky pistons move a Redstone block back and forth. The more items you have in the hoppers, the longer the signal lasts. We recommend 30 blocks of one type, but you can vary this.

Conclusion: Why an Automatic Mushroom Farm in Minecraft is Essential

Mushrooms have the special ability to grow on their own. We take advantage of this with a farm that operates completely automatically! Ensure you always have enough mushrooms to support your adventures. Rent your Minecraft server and build an effective mushroom farm! Use the mushrooms as stylish decorations, for brewing important potions, or as food.
