Discover Frog Varieties and Build an Automatic Frog Light Farm in Minecraft

Minecraft is a game with a richly diverse fauna. We’ve already covered many different animals in previous articles, but we’ve yet to explore frogs. These amusing creatures are incredibly handy! The mobs, chosen by the community to be added to the game, are a blend of real frogs and some Minecraft fantasy. They create a wonderful bridge for players who want to explore wildlife and collect various items. Particularly, the colourful frog lights are indispensable for creative minds! Today, we’ll provide you with all the essential information about frogs in Minecraft and show you how to set up a simple and automatic frog light farm!

Exploring Frog Habitats in Minecraft

Finding frogs in Minecraft

Frogs have an interesting history in Minecraft. They were first introduced during Minecon Live 2019 but lost the vote to the mountain biome. However, two years later, the “Wild Update” was announced, where the swamp, as the runner-up biome, was revamped. Frogs were a key component of this update.

Since version 1.19, you can find frogs in the swamp and mangrove swamp. In the regular swamp, you can find brown frogs, while in the mangrove swamp, you’ll find the white variety. The creatures happily hop around and are hard to miss.

Understanding Frog Breeding and Colours

Breeding frogs in Minecraft

We’ve already covered two of the three different colour variants, but one is still missing. There is also a blue frog, which does not spawn naturally. However, you can obtain it — as well as the other two forms — through breeding. This process works slightly differently compared to other animals.

For breeding, you need slime balls, which can be obtained from green slimes in the swamp. Feed the slimes to the frogs, and soon there will be offspring. One of the frogs will seek a nearby water source to lay eggs. Wait for the eggs to hatch into a tadpole.

Depending on the area where the tadpole grows into a frog, its colour will change! You can carry the tadpoles in a bucket to achieve your desired colour variant.

  • Temperate Frog: Pleasant biomes (forests and meadows)

  • Cold Frog: Icy biomes (mountains, snow, and the End)

  • Warm Frog: Hot biomes (deserts, jungles, and the Nether)

If you have all three variations on leads, there is even an achievement! It’s called “When the Squad Hops” and is a great milestone for your Minecraft world.

Frogs versus Fireflies: An Update Conflict

Before the update was introduced, frogs mistakenly ate fireflies. However, these are toxic to real frogs, and thus they were removed from the game. Parrots experienced a similar situation, initially breeding with cookies — but chocolate is also toxic to them. Frogs are another example where Mojang has drawn from real-life models. Interestingly, fireflies will be added in the upcoming Spring Update 2025, in the form of firefly bushes.

The Art of Frog Light Production

But you may be wondering why you need all three colours. Well, for building projects, frogs are indispensable and a source of beautiful lights in Minecraft! You can obtain three different colour variants, expanding your repertoire of materials!

When a frog eats a magma cube, it can transform it into a frog light. These blocks are similar to sea lanterns and make an excellent light source for your constructions. However, this only works with small magma cubes and can be somewhat tricky. After all, these creatures can only be found in the Nether. Fortunately, this can be circumvented with a portal and some leads! Magma cubes do not attack your frogs, making a farm relatively straightforward.

Frog light colours and their corresponding frogs:

  • Temperate Frog: Ochre

  • Cold Frog: Verdant

  • Warm Frog: Pearl

The frog lights are simply spat out and can be collected by you or a hopper. They can be placed and removed without any tools, which is an advantage over other light sources like glowstone. After achieving the previous milestone, you can unlock the achievement “With United Forces!” using three different frog lights.

Guide to Building an Automatic Frog Light Farm

Since frog lights are such a great light source, you’ll surely want to have and collect several of them. For this, it’s worthwhile to construct an automatic farm! You will need your desired frogs and a good source of magma cubes. In the Nether, these only spawn in basalt deltas, but you can also find magma cube spawners in some bastion remnants, which are ideal for such a farm.

Building Materials for the Farm

  • several stacks of building blocks

  • three slabs

  • powder snow in a bucket

  • 9 hoppers + 9 carpets

  • a double chest + glass block

  • ladders and a trapdoor

Step-by-Step Guide to Construction

  1. Find a bastion remnant that has a spawner for magma cubes. Switch to “Peaceful” mode for the construction to avoid disturbance from piglins. Then measure a frame around the spawner. The dimensions are two blocks above and five below the spawner. The radius is five blocks, resulting in a farm size of 8x11x11 blocks.

  2. On one side, construct a small chamber where you can stand AFK and lure the magma cubes. Use slabs to create a small lookout into the farm. In front, dig out a 3x3 field and dig it four blocks deep. The cubes will fall in here and be eaten by the frogs. Place your hoppers in the hole and cover them with carpets. All hoppers should point to a chest that you can open from your small chamber. This works best with a glass block overhead.

  3. In the centre, one block above the ground, you must place a block of powder snow. This breaks the magma cubes into their smallest form so that the frogs can eat them.

  4. Bring the frogs through a portal into your farm. It’s best to build this temporarily directly in the farm so the frogs can enter the 3x3 hole. When you have enough frogs, go to your small chamber and switch the monsters back on. Magma cubes will then spawn, attempt to jump to you, but fall into the hole and are turned into frog lights by the frogs!

Conclusion

Frogs are a fascinating creature in Minecraft and, with the help of magma cubes, drop frog lights. These light sources are some of the most beautiful blocks to bring your building projects to life and illuminate them perfectly! Rent your own Minecraft server and set off with your friends to find the various frog colours. Then, you can work together on an automatic frog light farm to always have the best visibility!
