Bartering with Piglins in Minecraft: Guide & Build an Automatic Farm

In Minecraft, you can trade not only with villagers but also with Piglins in the Nether. These creatures are generally neutral towards you but have a keen interest in gold! When you trade with them, you can obtain some exclusive items. Bartering with Piglins is a great way to acquire exclusive items. As long as you have enough gold supplies and build an automatic machine, everything runs without your input. Today, let’s take a closer look at Piglins, their behavior patterns, the items they trade, and what they are capable of!

Piglins in Minecraft: Creatures with a Fondness for Gold

Minecraft Bartering with Piglins 1

Piglins can be found in the Nether and are a relatively new mob introduced with the Nether Update 1.16. They replaced the former Pigmen mob that existed since the Alpha version of Minecraft. Piglins can be found in the Nether Wastes, Crimson Forest, and Bastion Remnants. You usually encounter them in groups.

Piglins are neutral mobs that will not attack you, the player, as long as you wear at least one piece of gold armor. This is a testament to their love for anything that glitters gold! Always wear a piece of gold armor to prevent Piglins from attacking you, as they can become quite aggressive in groups and quickly kill you. They will also attack if you initiate an attack on them. They use both gold swords and crossbows to attack, and some even wear gold armor.

Also, be cautious not to open chests near Piglins, as they dislike this and will attack you even if you’re wearing gold. Always use a hopper to empty chests.

All Items in Piglin Bartering: Probabilities and Chances

When you throw a gold ingot at Piglins, they will pick it up, inspect it, and give you a random item in return. This allows you to collect some cool items that are either exclusive or difficult to obtain otherwise. Be careful not to throw other gold items, as Piglins will take anything made of gold. The trade only works with gold ingots.

Minecraft Bartering with Piglins 2

The trade is random, unlike with villagers, so you can’t determine which item you’ll receive. However, there is a list of probabilities!

Chance of 8.71%:

  • 1 Obsidian
  • 1-3 Crying Obsidian
  • 1 Fire Charge
  • 2-4 Leather
  • 2-8 Soul Sand
  • 2-8 Nether Brick
  • 6-12 Arrows (Bedrock) / Spectral Arrows (Java)
  • 8-16 Gravel
  • 8-16 Blackstone

Chance of 4.36%:

  • 3-9 String
  • 5-12 Nether Quartz

Chance of 2.18%:

  • 1 Water Bottle
  • 10-36 Iron Nuggets
  • 2-4 Ender Pearls

Chance of 1.74%:

  • Enchanted Boots with “Soul Speed”
  • Splash Potion of Fire Resistance
  • Potion of Fire Resistance

Chance of 1.09%:

  • Enchanted Book with “Soul Speed”

Enchanted books, for instance, are a very rare trade and can only be found in the Nether. Some of the other items are also quite handy, including Obsidian, Ender Pearls, or Nether Quartz. As long as you have enough gold, you will be able to trade sufficiently.

Farming Gold in Minecraft: How to Get Enough for Piglin Bartering

There are various ways to acquire gold in abundance. You probably have already found enough in the Overworld, but for automation, infinite gold is essential. Moreover, you probably won’t need it for your tools, as gold itself is very soft and doesn’t last long.

Ways to obtain gold include:

  • Mining in the Nether
  • Mining in the Overworld (especially abundant in Badlands/Mesa)
  • Gold Farm

Construction Guide: Automatic Piglin Trading Station in Minecraft

Of course, you don’t always have to trade with Piglins yourself; you can set up an automatic farm. This isn’t particularly difficult! You just need a reliable source of gold, and you’ll be able to gather enough items. The chances remain random, but as mentioned, some items are a really good trade. Build the farm near Piglins so you can easily capture one!

You can also expand this small farm and create multiple chambers. However, you’ll need sufficient gold to make it worthwhile! Remember to wear a piece of gold armor to prevent Piglins from attacking you.

Building Materials

  • 3 Building Blocks
  • 8 Glass Blocks
  • Hopper + Double Chest
  • 1 Comparator
  • 2 Redstone Dust
  • 1 Redstone Torch
  • 1 Dispenser
  • Name Tag or Gold Armor Piece

Step-by-Step Guide: Building an Automatic Piglin Trading Station

First, place a double chest with a hopper on one of the short sides. This will collect the traded items. Behind it, place a comparator, which ensures the entire mechanism works automatically. The comparator checks the hopper and sends a signal to the dispenser after each trade, which then ejects a gold ingot.

Use three building blocks, each to the right and left of the hopper and behind the comparator. Then surround the hopper on three sides with glass walls that are two blocks high. The Piglin will be trapped there shortly.

Minecraft Bartering with Piglins 4

You can attract a Piglin best with gold. There are surely some nearby. Before luring one, block the hopper with the redstone torch and throw the gold onto it (it shouldn’t fall through). A Piglin will come and inspect the gold. Be quick and build the fourth glass wall.

The Piglin is now trapped! As long as the redstone torch is still active, you can give it a gold armor piece. Alternatively, remove the torch and name the Piglin with a name tag. Both actions will prevent it from despawning.

Next, we need to construct the remaining redstone. Use the torch just used and place it on the building block behind the comparator. Above it, place a block and then two redstone dust leading to the centre. Place the dispenser, with its opening facing downwards, over the hole where the Piglin is trapped. Fill the dispenser with plenty of gold ingots.

Minecraft Bartering with Piglins 6

Finally, you need to activate the farm and start the loop. This can be done with a simple switch on the back block, which you toggle twice. A gold ingot will be ejected, and the Piglin will trade it for one of the items listed above. The item slides through the hopper, causing the comparator to send another signal to the dispenser. As long as there are enough gold ingots, the farm will run automatically!

Piglin bartering is a truly underrated feature that you should definitely utilise in your world. It saves you the hassle of collecting certain items, especially Ender Pearls or Nether Quartz.
